Frequently Asked Questions

What is Botox?

Botox, used for headaches, wrinkles, excessive sweating and other medical indications, is a highly diluted purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

How does Botox work?

When injected into a muscle, Botox blocks the message for the muscle’s contraction. For example, the muscles responsible for frowning can be relaxed, and headache pain can be temporarily decreased or stopped. The effects of Botox start three to seven days after the injection and a treatment usually remains effective for three months or more.

Where can Botox be used?

Botox reduces frown lines between the eyes, crow’s feet, and horizontal forehead creases. Targeting these sites in addition to the base of the head and muscles in the upper shoulders has been found to alleviate headaches. Injecting muscles beside the spine can relieve back pain. Infiltrating underarm sweat glands significantly and sometimes completely reduces perspiration.

Do Botox injections hurt?

The discomfort associated with Botox is usually minimal. However, topical cream can be applied prior to the procedure to prevent any possible discomfort.

Is Botox safe?

Medical doctors have been using Botox since 1980 and it is FDA and HPB approved, with an excellent safety profile

What is the cost of Botox treatments?

Botox treatments range from $100 to $1400+. The cost is based on the number of units used and size of the region being treated. Medical therapeutic use of Botox is often covered in whole or in part by private insurance plans.
